Dresses for the Oscars

This is one of the most glamorous events of the year and while we're sleeping, the most well-known people of Hollywood will be walking the red carpet in Los Angeles.

The Artist is a clear favourite with 10 nominations in total. Soon we will know if Meryl Streep won an Oscar for her interpretation of the former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt are both up for best actor, certainly a difficult decision. But for those of us who love fashion, this is a moment to admire how beautiful our favourite actresses are.

Professor Deborah Nadoolman Landis, a leading Hollywood costume designer and author, is curating the upcoming exhibition on costume design at the V&A.

She said "the red carpet is also a transformation. They would never be in the red carpet if they wouldn't have made a great performance as the character we connect to and have fallen in love with."

We do connect with the heroes and heroines of the most engaging films we've watched but we also enjoy seeing their transformation in the red carpet. I've selected the most suitable dresses for the Oscars from the latest catwalk shows.

For the Golden Globes, I've actually managed to get three dresses right but it's not about that, it's more about finding a special dress that would make a talented actress look ravishing.

The golden dresses on the top of this page are my favourite, but I also love the poetry and romance of the soft pink dresses and the way nature seems to embrace the woman's body in the golden Marchesa and black Gucci.

For a more dramatic look, which is emerging as a big trend from the latest catwalk shows, a black dress is  definitely a good choice or you can add golden embellishments to make it look even more precious.

Red on the red carpet is certainly a big statement but there are actresses bold enough to pull this off with style and confidence. Women with a strong attitude can also look great with big volume shapes such as these Zac Posen and Marchesa dresses.
